Quarantine: The Loners

My Review of Quarantine: The Loners

Quarantine: The Loners (Quarantine, #1)Goodreads Description

As original as The Hunger Games, set within the walls of a high school exactly like yours.” – Kami Garcia, New York Times best-selling co-author of the Beautiful Creatures novels

It was just another ordinary day at McKinley High—until a massive explosion devastated the school. When loner David Thorpe tried to help his English teacher to safety, the teacher convulsed and died right in front of him. And that was just the beginning.

A year later, McKinley has descended into chaos. All the students are infected with a virus that makes them deadly to adults. The school is under military quarantine. The teachers are gone. Violent gangs have formed based on high school social cliques. Without a gang, you’re as good as dead. And David has no gang. It’s just him and his little brother, Will, against the whole school.

In this frighteningly dark and captivating novel, a 2012 Booklist Editor’s Choice, Lex Thomas locks readers inside a school where kids don’t fight to be popular, they fight to stay alive.

“Take Michael Grant’s Gone and Veronica Roth’s Divergent, rattle them in a cage until they’re ready to fight to the death, and you’ll have something like this nightmarish debut…Thomas’ whirlwind pace, painful details, simmering sexual content, and moments of truly shocking ultra-violence thrust this movie-ready high school thriller to the head of the class.” – Booklist (starred review)

I gave this book 3 stars

The Review:

Can you imagine entering your own high school and then is bombard when every adult start dying around you and you don’t know why? Then you find out you can’t leave the school (every kid worst nightmare) because of a virus that yourself carries and is LETHAL to every adult.  Now you’re waiting on “Graduating” meaning a release date when you becomes virus-free. and re-entering the world.

So what do you do in the meantime awaiting your graduation date? You try to avoid the groups unless you’re in one, you watch out for the person that is the closest to you . . . your brother. A war starts between the Varsity and the Rebels, when David Thorpe is saved from certain death by the leader of the Varsity Sam Howard. Now these two have history together, they were once friends, teammates but everything changes when David lost his mother and separated from the social life AND when David realizes that his own girlfriend was cheating on him and a huge outburst fight between David and Sam before the quarantine happen at the high school.

Will Thorpe is David’s little brother and is a loner, keeps to himself kind of guy. Now Will and David are struggling to survive just as well other teenagers but you have a greater chance of survival if you are in a group and is labeled. Will does his own thing until he save his brother from being nearly killed and also help save a girl named Lucy from certain traumatic.  Now Will had always has eyes on Lucy but never did anything to talk to her until she has eyes for David and now he has conflicted feeling and anger.

There is a fight for survival, a fight among the Varsity and the Rebels . . . there is going to be War, not over resources but over hierarchy status.

My Thoughts:

From the beginning it sounded good and different but to me it was very slow-pace and perhaps another re-read is needed for this book to get a better understanding of this terrify disaster for these teens. School is rough especially when you’re a loner and aren’t friends with the right people and right group that will give you benefits.  David has a lot riding on him to lead this group of followers against the Varsity but does he have the heart for it?

I like Will very much and feel sad that he is always in his brother’s shadow and it worst when a girl he likes doesn’t see him. I could see him as a better leader rather than anybody because he doesn’t take no for an answer and he doesn’t go down without a fight.

But Lucy is also conflicted, she has mixed feeling for both of the Thorpe boys and she couldn’t be more graceful for them for taking her in to their hiding place and shelter.

Shatter Me Review

Yeah Yeah I know I’m a little late on reading this book when everyone is waiting for Unravel Me that coming this

Here’s the detail of the book

Shatter Me (Shatter Me, #1) No one knows why Juliette’s touch is fatal, but

The Reestablishment has plans for her. Plans to

use her as a weapon. But Juliette has plans of

her own. After a lifetime without freedom, she’s

finally discovering a strength to fight back for

the very first time—and to find a future with the

one boy she thought she’d lost forever.

My Review

For awhile, I pushed off this book when it was first release because I had other books that I really wanted to read. So now that I got this book for Christmas I decided one night to read and guess what? I couldn’t put the book down! So let’s start with the review . . .

Juliette is fatal to anyone that touches her, well just about anyone. After so many days being along, she obtain a cellmate named Adam. Although he seems like a jerk he is actually very kind until Juliette is taken out of the cell and into the compound. That is where she met Warner, he has big plans for her. Putting Juliette through courses of what Warner expects of her, her guard/watcher Adam (Yes Adam again)they both learn that Adam can touch her without being fatally hurt.

Now for the boys: Adam and Warner
I fell in love with Adam from the very beginning, even though I was unsure of his purpose but now I know . . . He’s Juliette’s Savior. The bird that Juliette dream that would come and set her free.
Warner, he is beyond the most horrible human I have ever met. His desires are greed and power. He wanted to use Juliette for his own benefits and then among the mist of Juliette escaping he realizes that he can also touch her without any effects. This drove him to a love obsession with her and kiss her when he divided her and Adam. But thankfully Juliette was smart and use his gun to shoot him and took off to find Adam.

Adam shares his devotion and his mission in protecting the ones that are important to him. When you are unsure if someone if a friend or a foe . . . but that one person save your lives by taking you to a top-secret location where Juliette will learn more about who she is.  They will meet others with unique abilities.

What will be next for Juliette, Adam and Warner?

Best Book Covers of 2012

MERRY CHRISTMAS

from me to you, spreding the joy of Christmas 🙂

Let’s Vote! Which Book Covers are the best of 2012?

I’ve decided to choose US Covers Vs International Covers that were beyond my favorite.

So what do you like? What do you love? What don’t you like?

Before I Wake

Before I Wake (Soul Screamers, #6)Before I Wake (Soul Screamers, #6)What I like about these covers, are that they haven’t change the theme of each one. With the UK covers they are presented with a gray and mysterious look. The US fit the bill for all of the other covers presenting Kaylee in a dress.(Only a few was present in the books)  I was curious on what the color for Before I Wake was going to be because Rachel have quip that she’s doesn’t wear pink and therefore Kaylee was presented wearing a pink dress. Rachel Loves the Pink cover and went to find a pink sharpie so she can sign the books in pink ink. From what I can tell that it is a one shoulder dress. Its one of my favorite beside the Sapphire (My Soul to Steal) dress and the omnibus covers white (Volume 1) and Black (Volume 2)

I died on a Thursday—killed by a monster intent on stealing my soul. The good news? He didn’t get it.The bad news? Turns out not even death will get you out of high school…Covering up her own murder was one thing, but faking life is much harder than Kaylee Cavanaugh expected. After weeks spent “recovering,” she’s back in school, fighting to stay visible to the human world, struggling to fit in with her friends and planning time alone with her new reaper boyfriend. But to earn her keep in the human world, Kaylee must reclaim stolen souls, and when her first assignment brings her face-to-face with an old foe, she knows the game has changed. Her immortal status won’t keep her safe. And this time Kaylee isn’t just gambling with her own life.

Partials

Partials (Partials, #1)I haven’t read many science-fiction books until now, and what made me pick up Dan Wells’s PARTIALS book was based on the inguring  cover. The US cover remains me of an X-Files Theme or something I’ve seen on television on the SYFY channel that was based on the end of the world disasters. Both covers aren’t much different from each other and I could be happy with either one, I’ve seen the second book of this series and it is similar to the first book but has one extra character on the cover facing the future.

The human race is all but extinct after a war with Partials–engineered organic beings identical to humans–has decimated the population. Reduced to only tens of thousands by RM, a weaponized virus to which only a fraction of humanity is immune, the survivors in North America have huddled together on Long Island while the Partials have mysteriously retreated. The threat of the Partials is still imminent, but, worse, no baby has been born immune to RM in more than a decade. Our time is running out.
Kira, a sixteen-year-old medic-in-training, is on the front lines of this battle, seeing RM ravage the community while mandatory pregnancy laws have pushed what’s left of humanity to the brink of civil war, and she’s not content to stand by and watch. But as she makes a desperate decision to save the last of her race, she will find that the survival of humans and Partials alike rests in her attempts to uncover the connections between them–connections that humanity has forgotten, or perhaps never even knew were there.
Dan Wells, acclaimed author of “I Am Not a Serial Killer,” takes readers on a pulsepounding journey into a world where the very concept of what it means to be human is in question–one where our humanity is both our greatest liability and our only hope for survival.

Rift (Nightshade Prequel)

Rift (Nightshade Prequel, #1)Rift I’d personally like the US cover for Rift because it fits the story, the other cover is unclear for the concept of the book, yes there was a love story but that didn’t come til later in the books when the two characters admits their feeling to each other. This book was from the medieval time/era so the other cover doesn’t fit the theme.

Chronicling the rise of the Keepers, this is the stunning prequel to Andrea Cremer’s internationally bestselling Nightshade trilogy!
Sixteen-year-old Ember Morrow is promised to a group called Conatus after one of their healers saves her mother’s life. Once she arrives, Ember finds joy in wielding swords, learning magic, and fighting the encroaching darkness loose in the world. She also finds herself falling in love with her mentor, the dashing, brooding, and powerful Barrow Hess. When the knights realize Eira, one of their leaders, is dabbling in dark magic, Ember and Barrow must choose whether to follow Eira into the nether realm or to pledge their lives to destroying her and her kind.
With action, adventure, magic, and tantalizing sensuality, this book is as fast-paced and breathtaking as the Nightshade novels.

Pushing the Limits

Pushing the Limits (Pushing the Limits, #1)Pushing the Limits (Pushing the Limits, #1)I like the US editon rather than the UK because you can see the slip cover enlarge on the book, but because I don’t know what UK really is. It is an IMO matter. The cover is so dark and brooding but I love it, I found it drawn to me and I kept thinking I had to pick this book up and read it. Best decison I ever made.

No one knows what happened the night Echo Emerson went from popular girl with jock boyfriend to gossiped-about outsider with “freaky” scars on her arms. Even Echo can’t remember the whole truth of that horrible night. All she knows is that she wants everything to go back to normal. But when Noah Hutchins, the smoking-hot, girl-using loner in the black leather jacket, explodes into her life with his tough attitude and surprising understanding, Echo’s world shifts in ways she could never have imagined. They should have nothing in common. And with the secrets they both keep, being together is pretty much impossible.
Yet the crazy attraction between them refuses to go away. And Echo has to ask herself just how far they can push the limits and what she’ll risk for the one guy who might teach her how to love again

Finale

Finale (Hush, Hush, #4)Finale (Hush, Hush, #4) The epic ending of the HUSH, HUSH series presented a very compelling cover, both version are similar in image and font but across the seas, they use a red font color rather than white or black like the other books in the series. They did a pretty good job on keeping the gray-scale and featuring either Patch or Nora. This time the cover portray what happening in the book, a reach for the love of your life and you’ll do anything to protect him or her.

Fates unfurl in the gripping conclusion to the New York Times bestselling Hush, Hush saga.
Nora is more certain than ever that she is in love with Patch. Fallen angel or no, he is the one for her. Her heritage and destiny may mean they are fated to be enemies, but there is no turning her back on him. Now Nora and Patch must gather their strength to face one last, perilous trial. Old enemies return, new enemies are made, and a friend’s ultimate betrayal threatens the peace Patch and Nora so desperately want. The battle lines are drawn—but which sides are they on? And in the end, are there some obstacles even love can’t conquer?

And don’t forget! Head on over to http://www.twochicksonbooks.com/ to enter an Box of ARCs, probably the best you could get 🙂

Best Books read in 2012

Sighs . . . I have read so many books this year that I still can’t believe I “Might” not make my reading challenge. BUT I can share some of my Best Books Read in 2012 🙂

Since most were series books, I’m having a hard time debating . . . Here’s goes nothing

Pushing the Limits (Pushing the Limits, #1)Kitty and the Silver Bullet (Kitty Norville, #4)Heaven (Halo, #3)Before I Wake (Soul Screamers, #6)Ascend (Trylle Trilogy, #3)Demonglass (Hex Hall, #2)Dark Kiss (Nightwatchers, #1)Partials (Partials, #1)City of Lost Souls by Cassandra ClareBloodrose (Nightshade, #3)

Pushing the Limits

Everything was so raw in Pushing the Limits, I love the writing and the storyline PLUS two most unlikely lovers that each had their own dark secret past.

Kitty and the Silver Bullet

Major things happen in this book for Kitty, she has a new mate and love plus obtain a pack which makes her the Alpha female and Ben the Alpha male. While something in her life that she never thought of and made her wonder on certain things. But danger always follows Kitty but she stood her ground like every battle she’s faces

Heaven

The finale of the Halo series, which made me sad because I love Beth and Xavier. They were willing to put everything at risk to be together, while heaven and hell didn’t agree with them their love never faultered. The ending was truly bittersweet as Beth and Xavier now has the rest of their life together.

Before I wake

You all should know but if you don’t sorry to be spoliery but I have to say it. Kaylee die . . . YEP but don’t worry she came back as a extractor. She isn’t with toxic Nash anymore (sorry Nash) but she did a 360 and fell in love with Nash’s older Reaper brother Tod. Now Kaylee must find her place in the human world while hellions are threating to ruin her sanity.

Ascend

Prepare for WAR, prepare for marriage, prepare for falling in love with the enemy? Wendy’s duties are split into parts, when she becomes queen and falls in love with Loki and married Tove. But Wendy’s friends always help her stand tall while others looks at her like a traitor because of who her father is. Can Wendy save her kingdom, or will she fail?

Hex hall series

If you like Harry Potter, you’ll love the Hex Hall series. You’ll meet Sophie as she learn about who she is and what she is as far as being a witch, she has an awesome vampire roommate, a rlivary, and a thing for the hottest warlock who just happens to be a huge threat towards her.

Dark Kiss

One kiss changes everything and when you are helping fallen angels and demons alike you should only do that but how can you resist one fallen angel? Then you learn about things you never thought exist.

Partials

What do you do when the survival rates for humans drops? the virus RM threatens humanity and the “Partials” are the reasons (So they say) One thing to do is capture a partial but along the way you find out something you never expected?

City of Lost Souls

When you anticipating this for montbhs and is left with questions of what will happen next? Yeah you get it from this book as well, so good luck.

Bloodrose

The conclusion of Nightshade, where just about anything happen and a new look for Calla. Her heart torn in two and a fight for her life is in motion

Quick Cover Reveal

So if you remember awhile back where I read the most amazing book and it was so raw because it was awesome

Katie McGarry’s Pushing the Limits bring the next installment called

“DARE YOU TO”

This is Beth’s Story if you remember her from the first book as one of Noah’s close friend

Dare You To (Pushing the Limits, #2)The Blurb

“I dare you…”

If anyone knew the truth about Beth Risk’s home life, they’d send her mother to jail and seventeen-year-old Beth who knows where. So she protects her mom at all costs. Until the day her uncle swoops in and forces Beth to choose between her mom’s freedom and her own happiness. That’s how Beth finds herself living with an aunt who doesn’t want her and going to a school that doesn’t understand her. At all. Except for the one guy who shouldn’t get her, but does….

Ryan Stone is the town golden boy, a popular baseball star jock-with secrets he can’t tell anyone. Not even the friends he shares everything with, including the constant dares to do crazy things. The craziest? Asking out the Skater girl who couldn’t be less interested in him.

But what begins as a dare becomes an intense attraction neither Ryan nor Beth expected. Suddenly, the boy with the flawless image risks his dreams-and his life-for the girl he loves, and the girl who won’t let anyone get too close is daring herself to want it all…

Now the sad part is that this book doesn’t come out til May 2013, so we got a ways to go BUT if you want to read a deleted scene of Noah and Echo . . .

Tomorrow go to http://bewitchedbookworms.com/ and get a taste.

Teaser Tuesday

I hope you all decided to join Hackaroo’s Reviews “Shifters Read-A-Long” I’m so excited to be re-reading this book again, although I have a very good memory of what happens in the books.

For the Month of November, We’re reading “Stray” and I’m going to give a teaser to you all!

My teaser will be based on a random page but first let’s introduce Stray.

Goodreads Description

There are only eight breeding female werecats left . . . And I’m one of them.

I look like an all-American grad student. But I am a werecat, a shape-shifter, and I live in two worlds.

Despite reservations from my family and my Pride, I escaped the pressure to continue my species and carved out a normal life for myself. Until the night a Stray attacked.

I’d been warned about Strays — werecats without a Pride, constantly on the lookout for someone like me: attractive, female, and fertile. I fought him off, but then learned two of my fellow tabbies had disappeared.

This brush with danger was all my Pride needed to summon me back . . . for my own protection. Yeah, right. But I’m no meek kitty. I’ll take on whatever — and whoever — I have to in order to find my friends. Watch out, Strays — ’cause I got claws, and I’m not afraid to use them . .

And now for the teaser . . .  flipping pages . . .flipping, flipping and STOP! Page 158

“I studied Marc’s face, conscious suddenly of how much he’d changed since the day we met, the morning after his mother died. He’d looked so scared, lying alone in the guest bed, a wisp of a boy with dark curly hair and deep dimples. He’d arrive at the Lazy S with nothing but a threadbare suitcase and  sad scowl But he was a fighter. Even as an eight-year-old, I’d recognized the will to survive in the quiet defiance in his eyes and hard line of his mouth, both of which said he’d seen the worst the world had to offer, and that nothing I put him through could possibly compare.”

Just a reminder, Stray should be read by the 25th of Novemeber and on the 27th we will recap and chat about STRAY. Also I wish you all a Happy Thanksgivings 🙂

It’s that kind of day

So officially tomorrow I will be removing history class from my list and my english class is soon to be ending for the semester. But that’s not what this post is about . . .

Today is Picture book day in my world, because I’ve been so greatly absent among my reading, reviewing and other stuff. I did go today as a sense of normality to my local bookstore and purchase The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater.

The Raven Boys (Raven Cycle, #1)

“There are only two reasons a non-seer would see a spirit on St. Mark’s Eve,” Neeve said. “Either you’re his true love . . . or you killed him.”

It is freezing in the churchyard, even before the dead arrive.

Every year, Blue Sargent stands next to her clairvoyant mother as the soon-to-be dead walk past. Blue herself never sees them—not until this year, when a boy emerges from the dark and speaks directly to her.

His name is Gansey, and Blue soon discovers that he is a rich student at Aglionby, the local private school. Blue has a policy of staying away from Aglionby boys. Known as Raven Boys, they can only mean trouble.

But Blue is drawn to Gansey, in a way she can’t entirely explain. He has it all—family money, good looks, devoted friends—but he’s looking for much more than that. He is on a quest that has encompassed three other Raven Boys: Adam, the scholarship student who resents all the privilege around him; Ronan, the fierce soul who ranges from anger to despair; and Noah, the taciturn watcher of the four, who notices many things but says very little.

For as long as she can remember, Blue has been warned that she will cause her true love to die. She never thought this would be a problem. But now, as her life becomes caught up in the strange and sinister world of the Raven Boys, she’s not so sure anymore.

From Maggie Stiefvater, the bestselling and acclaimed author of the Shiver trilogy and The Scorpio Races, comes a spellbinding new series where the inevitability of death and the nature of love lead us to a place we’ve never been before.

Now that thing I said in the beginning where it was Picture Book day? Here’s a snap shot of my Cat (whom I woke up from his nap and now won’t leave me alone)

That’s all for now, look forward for more picture book days soon!

Finale

Another series ending, the famous Hush, Hush series by Becca Fitzpatrick

I read this series in late November, and I remember going crazy over it! As I was anxiously waiting to get Silence which I got on Christmas 2011 and read it right away.

I love the concept, the theme and the story plot . . . Now the final book “FINALE” will concluded the series and we’ll see what will happen after we left off Silence.

Finale (Hush, Hush, #4)About the Book:

Fates unfurl in the gripping conclusion to the New York Times bestselling Hush, Hush saga.Nora is more certain than ever that she is in love with Patch.

I can’t wait to buy this book and read this book which will add one more book read to my GR’s Book Challenge. I have seven book to read before the end of the year, I might make it but it is not of importance that I make it or not because my schedule does not tolerate my reading time from study time.

I will post my reviews of the first three books until I get Finale, but I also need to re-edit the review of the first three. So get ready for the big finale because I’ll expect it to be a wild ride.

Also Halloween is coming up 🙂 So who are you going to be, what are you going to be? I however don’t do a serious dressing up because of many reasons. I’m not big on Halloween, my cat isn’t wicked (Just Joking), it cost money to dress up, and I never know who or what to dress up as. But this year I’m planning to bake cupcakes and decorate the cupcakes in Halloween theme.
